Saturday practice: Dario best of rest...

Dario Franchitti moved into position to challenge the potential Penske domination at the Mid-Ohio Champ Car round with third fastest time in Saturday morning practice.

The Scot, who shares the track record of 1m05.347s with Gil de Ferran, was just 0.382 seconds behind session leader Helio Castroneves. Defending Mid-Ohio champion Castroneves was the only driver to break into the 1m05s bracket on Saturday morning with a lap of 1m05.846s in his Reynard-Honda. His Penske team mate Gil de Ferran was second fastest at 1m06.050s.

Franchitti complained of a general lack of grip on Friday, when he was 11th fastest. But an overnight re-think helped Dario improve on his Friday time by 1.3s.

Rookie Bruno Junqueira was fourth fastest on Saturday morning in his Ganassi Lola-Toyota, followed by Tony Kanaan and Jimmy Vasser.

Perhaps the most impressive performance in practice came from PacWest rookie Scott Dixon, who clocked the seventh fastest lap despite not having a single lap of practice on Friday. The PacWest cars were back in action on Saturday morning after a resolution was reached with Toyota over engine supply.

PacWest's other driver Mauricio Gugelmin was 19th fastest, which put him right behind CART points leader Kenny Brack.

Brack and the Rahal team continued to struggle to get to grips with their Lola chassis at their home track. Brack was 1.4s off Castroneves' time, while Max Papis was another two tenths back in 22nd place.
