Rockingham gets terrestrial TV coverage

Britain's first ever Champ Car oval race, the Rockingham 500, which takes place later this month, has been guaranteed terrestrial television coverage in the UK by the BBC, albeit a day late

European sports channel Eurosport usually provides live coverage of Champ Car events, but its deal does not cover the Rockingham 500 or the German 500 at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz the weekend before the British round.

However the BBC deal means the Rockingham race will be screened as part of Sunday Grandstand on BBC2, the day after the race is due to be run on Saturday September 22, weather permitting.

"We are delighted to win the rights to this premier event, which adds to our motorsport portfolio," said Pat Young of BBC Sport. "Only the BBC can bring these major events to the mass audience they deserve."

The on-track action will be covered by 14 cameras, including two 'robocams' on the perimeter wall and an aerial view provided by a Goodyear blimp.

Commentary will be by the BBC's British Superbike team with Suzy Perry presenting, Leigh Diffey commentating and former Champ car and Formula 1 ace Mark Blundell providing expert analysis.
