Renault F1 extends 3D SLS capability

Renault F1 Team in Enstone, UK, has extended its contract with Californian rapid prototype systems specialist 3D Systems to provide solid imaging solutions for both wind tunnel models and full-scale applications. The team has added two 'Vanguard' selective laser sintering (SLS) systems to the hardware in its chassis engineering factory in Enstone, UK, to enhance its rapid direct manufacturing capacity for the R24 racecar and its successors

In 2003, the F1 team inaugurated its Advanced Digital Manufacturing Centre, the largest rapid manufacturing facility of its kind in Europe and the result of a unique collaboration between the two companies. The facilities currently include four 'SLA 7000' systems, one 'OptoForm' and one 'ThermoJet' solid object printer.

The team says that the two new 'Vanguard' systems will allow it to begin manufacturing a large quantity of parts in-house, accelerating the overall production process by at least 30 percent and bringing significant cost savings. SLS technology is already in use within the cooling system, the electrical system and in some bodywork areas of the Renault R24.
