Practice 2: Kanaan takes over

Motivated by the presence of his friend Alex Zanardi, Tony Kanaan produced the fastest practice lap on Saturday morning at Toronto's Exhibition Place. Kanaan worked his Mo Nunn Lola-Honda to a 58.878-second lap of the bumpy 1.721-mile circuit to head Shinji Nakano, the only other driver who managed to break 59s.

Newman/Haas team-mates Christian Fittipaldi and Cristiano da Matta were up next in their Lola-Toyotas. Thanks to claiming the overnight pole on Friday, da Matta is guaranteed to start Sunday's 112-lap race no lower than second on the grid.

Bruno Junqueira was fifth fastest, but he had the only accident in the 75-minute session. The Brazilian took the rear wing off his Ganassi Lola-Toyota after spinning into a tyre wall.

Michael Andretti made the biggest gains, the seven-time Toronto winner finding 0.6 second from his best Friday qualifying lap.

Several drivers complained about the bumpy nature of the Toronto circuit, particularly in the braking area for Turn Three (the best passing point on the track) and the fast right-left sweepers leading onto the pit straight.
