Practice 1: Manning quickest

Darren Manning was quickest in the first free practice session for the London Champ Car Trophy at Brands Hatch. The Englishman was the only man to dip below the 38s bracket thus proving correct his theory that the Reynard chassis would suit the Kent track

The Briton lapped the 1.2-mile Indy circuit in 37.953s, an average lap speed of 113.066mph, in his Walker Racing Reynard, having spent most of the session swapping times with other Brands veterans Paul Tracy and Adrian Fernandez.

Neither of those drivers ended up second though as Bruno Junqueira stuck in a late fast lap as session came to a close. Championship leader Tracy who settled for third place.

Fernandez's session was eventful, setting the fourth fastest time before bringing the session to an end 20 minutes when he crashed into the tyre barriers at Clearways having lost control of his Lola through McLaren. The Mexican climbed from the car uninjured.

Sebastien Bourdais and Mario Haberfeld rounded out the top six.
