New pit stop rules for Brands Hatch

Champ Car World Series organiser CART has introduced a number of new rules for the next race at Brands Hatch on May 5, which are designed to enhance the already competitive nature of the series

Champ Car management and teams have revoked the mandatory pit window rule that has been in effect since the start of 2002, and will instead require each team to complete two pit stops under green flag conditions during the race.

During the mandatory green flag pit stops, teams must change all four tyres on the car. Cars are allowed to pit at will during caution periods, but will only be allowed to refuel the cars, with tyre changes banned.

Champ Car vice-president of operations John Lopes said: "The rules changes governing pit stops are Brands Hatch will also provide for a full afternoon of full-out racing, with teams now able to use different strategies in pursuit of victory."

Series organisers have also confirmed that an oval style, single-car qualifying format will be brought in for the final qualifying session for the Brands race, after concerns about traffic on the tight 1.2-mile Indy circuit.

Practice times on Saturday will determine the order for Saturday's qualifying session, with the fastest runner earning a championship point and a guaranteed front-row starting position for the race. On Sunday, each driver will be given four timed laps that will determine the final starting order for the race.
