New Michelin F1 tyre gets provisional approval
The technical department of the FIA "believes" that the narrower F1 front tyre from Michelin Motorsport will comply with the rules, having been shown both pristine and used examples on Monday by the French supplier and its leading teams, West McLaren Mercedes and BMW WilliamsF1 [Sep 9]. In a statement yesterday evening, the FIA said that the matter was now closed, and asserted that the championship could continue with all teams "on an equal footing."
Following complaints to the FIA by Bridgestone and Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, Michelin Motorsport has invested about £1m in new moulds in order to supply its teams with narrower front tyres at Monza this coming weekend. The tread width of its previous tyre is said to have expanded during wear to more than the 270mm maximum that has been permitted under the regulations since 1999.
The FIA stated: "It is regrettable that those using the earlier Michelin front tyre did not consult the FIA about possible excess tread as soon as they became aware of it."
