Mumbai vies with Hyderabad for F1 race

The western Indian state of Maharashtra, whose capital is Mumbai (Bombay), is to bid to host a future F1 Indian GP. The plan was announced by Sharad Pawar, the state's former chief minister, and Nazir Hoosein, the president of the Motorsports Association of India, which is based in Mumbai. The state of Andhra Pradesh, to the south-east, is also planning a project near the city of Hyderabad (Sep 5], but clearly does not enjoy the support of the ASN

Maharashtra executives say that their state offers superior infrastructure support, including a new motorway from Mumbai inland to Pune, and plans in place to upgrade Mumbai's Chattrapati Shivaji International airport and to construct a new airport in Pune.

The Mumbai-Pune area will hold an FIA international this December when the MRF India Rally, a round of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship, will take place. The MAI intends the event ultimately to become a round of the World Rally Championship.

According to the MAI, the economic impact of an F1 race is estimated to be US$140m and it could create direct and indirect job opportunities for as many as 75,000 Indian people.
