Montoya on pole in Vancouver

Juan Montoya and PJ Jones charged ahead of the rest of the field during the second qualifying session for today's CART race from Vancouver

Montoya picked up the sixth pole of his rookie season.

Jones will start next to him on the front row for the best start of his CART career.

Qualifying behind Jones were Paul Tracy, Dario Franchitti and Mark Blundell.

The first qualifying session saw Dario Franchitti on provisional pole on Friday, but cooler temperatures helped decrease the lap times in the second session.

Eight of the 27 qualifiers topped Franchitti's Friday time of 61.343s [104.520Mph].

Then Montoya turned in the fastest lap of 60.641s [105.730 mph].

Two groups of qualifiers went out on the track, with the slowest cars from Friday's session hitting the street first.

Andrea Montermini, driving for the All American Racers team this weekend, brought out the first red flag of the afternoon when he spun and stalled in Turn 12.

Robby Gordon turned in the fastest lap early in the session before he too hit the wall.

Montermini was also responsible for the second red flag of the session when he slammed into the tyre barrier in Turn 3.

A total of five drivers hit the wall before the first session was over.

Paul Tracy, who had several mishaps in the morning practice session, logged the fastest time for the slow group and the fastest time of the weekend at that point.

When the faster drivers took to the track, it was Franchitti into the wall first, the damage to his car forcing him back to the pits.

A subsequent bump into the wall ended any hopes he might have for keeping the pole.

Several drivers were able to better Tracy's time during the session and Juan Montoya turned in his fastest lap ten minutes into the 30-minute session.

Nobody was able to get within shooting distance until Jones jumped up into second place with only five minutes remaining in the session.

Jones might have truly given Montoya a fright had he not run off course and into the Turn 2 wall with only three minutes left in final qualifying.

A red flag was thrown for Jones and the time certain session ended with the red flag.
