Mo Nunn to run one car at Rockingham

Mo Nunn Racing will run just Tony Kanaan at this weekend's Rockingham 500 after team boss Morris Nunn decided to send Alex Zanardi's race team back home to America following the Italian's horrific crash at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz last Saturday

The news discounts rumours which surfaced on Tuesday that Englishman Johnny Herbert would race the two-time CART champion's No.66 Reynard-Honda at Rockingham this weekend.

Zanardi, who lost both his legs as a result of his collision with Alex Tagliani, remains in a critical but stable condition at Marzahn Hospital in Berlin, as doctors bring him out of a medically-induced coma. Nunn, after talking to Zanardi's wife Daniela, his team and his sponsors decided it would be best not to find a replacement for Saturday's inaugural Champ Car race at Rockingham.

"All our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Alex as he continues on his road to recovery," said Nunn. "The doctors say he is progressing about as well as can be expected and that is the best news we can hope for at this stage.

"We're not going to run the 66 car this weekend," continued Nunn. "Alex's wife Daniela would very much like the show to go on with the team this weekend at Rockingham. She feels there is unfinished business to tend to. However some of the guys on the team are understandably so devastated by what happened that we believe it would be difficult to fully concentrate on the task at hand. And that could pose a safety risk.

"Last week's tragic events back home in the States were tremendously unsettling as it was. And the accident on Saturday was just a terrible thing to endure for all of us. The best thing to do is send the 66 team home early and let them take proper time to get themselves together."

The No66 car is expected to return to action at Houston on October 7. It has yet to be announced who the driver will be.
