Misery continues for Montoya

Juan Montoya lost the chance to take his third CART victory of the season thanks to a series of strategic mistakes in the Molson Indy Vancouver

The Columbian was running third behind Team KOOL Green's Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy but failed to come in for his final stop under yellow as planned on lap 51. He was correctly picked up as the leader by the pace car, but assumed he should be waved through and drew alongside the saloon. Having been waved past to complete another lap, he found himself behind the KOOL cars and with another stop still to make. He then retired from third due to a fuel pick-up problem.

"The team called me in too later and then the pace car picked me up," Montoya explained. "I got alongside to get them to let me past but it took them half a lap to let me by. Then we had the same problem as we had at Mid-Ohio, there was fuel in the car but it wouldn't pick it up."

The Ganassi driver's fourth consecutive retirement drops him to 12th in the standings. Earlier on he had entertained the crowd with a spectacular battle for fourth with Helio Castroneves, trying time after time to pass the Brazilian around the outside at turn six.

"That's the kind of racing I like!" said Castroneves afterwards. "I was very happy with the battle I had with Juan. We were having fun!"
