Lyons wins another title
Formula 1 hopeful Richard Lyons won the Japanese GT Championship at Suzuka on Saturday. It was the Northern Irishman's second major title success in two weeks - he beat Andre Lotterer to the Formula Nippon crown a fortnight ago
Lyons, who is working hard to secure a drive in F1 in 2005, perhaps with the Jordan team, finished seventh in the GT finale partnered by Nismo team-mate Satoshi Motoyama. The pair finished seventh, one place ahead of Lyons' closest championship rival, despite carrying more ballast than any of the cars around them.
"This has been a fabulous season for everyone in the team and this title is as satisfying for me as my Formula Nippon win," said Lyons, who has also been linked to opportunities in the Champ Car World Series.
"To be involved in developing a car from scratch with a factory team is a tremendous privilege and a great help in my own progress as a driver.
"The level that these teams are operating at is at least the equal of any other series. The cars are quicker than almost every other car with a roof in the world.
"We're getting up to speeds in excess of 200mph in places and the level of technology is unequalled below Formula One. The races are long and tough, too, so all round it's been a great education."
