Las Vegas event gets green light

Las Vegas City Council has given the go-ahead for a street race in the city next year

As reported by the Las Vegas Review Journal, the City Council yesterday voted unanimously a promoter, DDB Ventures, to stage the race on downtown streets for the next five years, beginning with the inaugural race on April 8, next year.

The planned course doesn't use the main part of the Las Vegas famous' Strip, but rather a course round the city's older casinos at the North of the city, known as the Fremont Street Experience.

The city has agreed to one-off road important investment of $500,000 towards street improvements, and event promoters will spend an additional $1.3 million.

The series has held two races on the city's oval track, located approximately 15 miles north of the City, but the event was removed this year because of lack of spectator interest.

Confirmation of the date from Champ Car will come when organisers formally unveil their calendar for next year. A street race in Phoenix is also set to join the Champ Car calendar next year.
