Lapierre tops second session

The only two countries to have won an A1 Grand Prix race again led the way in the second free practice session for this weekend's fourth round of the championship at Eastern Creek

Nicolas Lapierre's French car beat the Brazilian entry of Nelson Piquet Jr by 0.234s in the second session. However, despite both drivers being the fastest, they did not have trouble-free runs.

Both Piquet and Lapierre had incidents - Piquet spun, and Lapierre went off track and ran wide moments before the end of the session.

Lapierre's fastest time of 1:21 037s did not match Piquet's time of 1:19.266 that topped the first session, as most teams saved their allocations of tyres for tomorrow's qualifying session and Sunday's races.

Switzerland's Neel Jani finished third despite being in hospital yesterday with a fever, with the Dutch car of Jos Verstappen finishing fourth.

Salvador Duran finished fifth but was one of a number of other drivers who had excursions as they continued to learn the Australian track. Duran went off at the super-fast Turn One curtailing his session after damaging the Mexican car.

Team China's session also finished early after Tengyi Jiang damaged the rear of his car in an early crash into the tyre barriers, which brought out the red flag. Adam Kahn also stopped the session after spinning off in the Pakistan entry.
