Kerr wins Shanghai sprint

Team GB's Robbie Kerr finally broke his A1GP duck by converting pole position in the 10-lap sprint race to a hard-earned win in Shanghai

Kerr led home New Zealand's Jonny Reid, who kept the pressure on the Team GB car all the way to the flag.

Reid's second place ahead of Nico Hulkenberg means that Team Germany will have to wait at least until the feature race before they can clinch the World Cup of Motorsport title.

"Excellent job," said a delighted and relieved Kerr. "We did the hard work yesterday by going P1, and then just keep it steady today.

"I've finally got one. I feel a bit numb at the moment. But I'm P1 for the feature race so that's the focus now."

Reid was never more than 1.1 seconds behind Kerr and closed in on the final couple of laps. But he couldn't put in a challenge to steal the win.

"I ran out of laps," said Reid. "But I've got a good car today and I'm confident for the longer race."

Kerr made a good getaway from the rolling start to lead Reid and Team USA's Jonathan Summerton into Turn 1. Hulkenberg almost got swamped by the pack, but he quickly recovered to take on Summerton, passing the US car into the hairpin with the help of his power boost.

Summerton lost another position at the hairpin on the next lap as Swiss driver Sebastien Buemi slipped up the inside.

Malaysia's Alex Yoong got ahead of India's Narain Karthikeyan at the start, the pair coming home sixth and seventh.

Team Canada's Sean McIntosh was on course to score a point on his A1GP return, but a bizarre and startling collision put him out. France's Jean-Karl Vernay was lining up for a pass on the start/finish straight, but he smacked his front left wheel and wing into McIntosh's right rear tyre as they screamed past the pits.

Vernay lost his wing and punctured a tyre, while rear-end damage forced McIntosh to pull off. That promoted South Africa's Alan van der Merwe to eighth.

Kerr will be looking to make it a Chinese double for Team GB in the feature race, while Hulkenberg just needs a handful of points to clinch the A1GP title for Germany.
