Kanaan tops practice times
Tony Kanaan did the best thing possible to lift the spirits of the Mo Nunn Racing team after team mate Alex Zanardi's horrific accident in Germany last week - top the time sheets at the end of the first practice session at Rockingham on Saturday
After two days of waiting due to moisture rising out of the track, known as 'weepers', the cars finally took to the track for a 75-minute session, starting at 1230 BST. Apart from Mauricio Gugelmin bringing out the yellow flags when he hit the wall on the exit of Turn 1 and a little oil on the Corby oval, the drivers were able to run almost uninterrupted.
Zanardi lost both his legs when he was hit from the side by Alex Tagliani during last weekend's German 500 and the Mo Nunn team have only fielded one car this weekend for Kanaan, who came back fighting at Rockingham as the early pacesetter.
Unfortunately the Brazilian's time does not improve his grid position as the starting order is determined by championship position due to Friday's qualifying session being cancelled and he will start 10th.
CART championship leader Kenny Brack, who will start from pole position, set the second fastest time followed by the Team Kool Green Reynards of Paul Tracy and Scot Dario Franchitti in third and fourth places.
Former Formula 1 man Roberto Moreno wound up fifth while Brack's main title rival Gil de Ferran finished sixth. The Penske ace lies 11 points behind the Swede in the standings and will line up on the front row for the start.
Due to the 'weeper' problems, the weekend's schedule has been revised numerous times and after a successful practice CART has released an official schedule.
The race length has been cut to 168 laps in order to accommodate both the weather, which is supposed to turn to rain later, and also the fading daylight. The race will start at 1627 BST and needs to run for at least half distance in order to count as a valid round of the Champ Car series.
