Junqueira sets the early pace

Bruno Junqueira paced the morning practice session for the Champ Car season finale at California Speedway.

The Brazilian rookie, who is fighting for his ride at Ganassi Racing, managed a 228.634mph lap in his Lola-Toyota to lead a surprisingly rapid Tora Takagi (228.327mph) and Paul Tracy (228.234mph).

Kenny Brack lost an engine and crashed early in the session but rebounded to take fourth best time in his spare Team Rahal Lola-Ford, while his team mate Max Papis also contacted the wall after spinning through the grass at the start/finish line. Papis was also quick in his spare car, notching the seventh best lap at 227.424mph.

Last year's race at California Speedway produced a rash of engine failures and the first session demonstrated that reliability is still an issue. In addition to Brack's blow-up, Patrick Carpentier (Ford) and Helio Castroneves (Honda) also blew engines, while Mauricio Gugelmin had a driveline failure in his PacWest Reynard-Toyota.

Practice continues on Friday afternoon, and for all the news keep up-to-date with Autosport.com.
