Jarvis to test British car at Pembrey
McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner Oliver Jarvis will test for the British A1 Grand Prix squad at Pembrey next week
The British Formula Three race winner will participate in a two-day test at Pembrey on July 17/18 as an assessment ahead of a possible seat with the team in the 2006/'07 season.
Although the team are likely to retain both '02 British F3 champion Robbie Kerr, who drove the majority of the inaugural season, and IRL IndyCar Series refugee Darren Manning, who raced for the team in the season finale in Shanghai, team principal John Surtees has said there is room for a third driver.
"We won't run just one person in the car this time," Surtees told Autosport. "In both the British and Canadian cars we will run as many as three drivers. The first race clashes with the Renault World Series anyway, so Robbie and Sean [McIntosh] won't do it. This will be an acclimatising test for the drivers."
Although Manning is expected to race the car in the season-opener at Zandvoort on October 1, because Kerr will be racing in the Renault World Series at Le Mans, Jarvis would benefit from newly introduced regulations that allow drivers under the age of 23 with no more than three A1 starts extra practice time.
Jarvis said: "First of all it's a good opportunity just to get a test in the car, and obviously it would be fantastic to be involved in the long-term. It's always good to experience different and more powerful cars, and I have the opportunity to show what I am capable of."
In addition to Jarvis, Surtees will also try out Champ Car Atlantic racer James Hinchcliffe and Formula BMW regular Kevin LaCroix in the same car as he searches for teammates for McIntosh for the Canadian A1 squad, of which he is also a figurehead.
