IRL gets major sponsor in 2000

The Indy Racing League has announced a new sponsor for 2000 - Internet search engine, Northern Light Technology

As part of the deal, which will earn the IRL more than $50m over a five-year period, the series will be renamed the Northern Light Indy Racing League Series.

In addition, a new Northern Light Cup will be awarded, to include a $1m dollar purse, to the season winner of the championship.

"Today's announcement is a major step forward for our series," Indy Racing League founder, and president and ceo of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Tony George.

"Northern Light's commitment increases the forward momentum of our series and is a genuine marketing and media partnership for both of our groups.

"This partnership gives us a platform for major growth, using the growing Internet power of Northern Light and the promise of Indy Racing. It is a great way to start the 2000 season."

As an integral part of the relationship, Northern Light will promote the Northern Light Indy Racing League Series on broadcast media, the Internet, with consumer promotions and through its marketing programmes.
