Ilmor's EDM partnership with Charmilles

A new three-year technical partnership has been signed by UK race engine manufacturer Ilmor Engineering and electrical discharge machining specialist Charmilles Technologies. As the sole EDM supplier to the Mercedes-Benz subsidiary, Charmilles has already supplied a 'Robofil 4020SI' wire EDM centre to Ilmor's facility in Brixworth, and will now install a 'Roboform 55P' die-sinking centre there. Ilmor will become a field-test site for Charmilles innovations

Both companies say that the new agreement, signed earlier this month by Ilmor technical director Mario Illien and Yves Serra, the president of Charmilles SA in Geneva, Switzerland, will strengthen their technical abilities, driven by the exacting manufacturing processes and short time frames demanded by the motorsport sector. The contract will be serviced out of the Charmilles UK office in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The companies will collaborate closely on new developments for maximising manufacturing efficiency. Serra commented: "Ilmor represents the entrepreneurial spirit, the tight teamwork and the relentless drive to win that is so characteristic of the F1 industry. We want to create the same spirit within our own company."

Illien noted: "Charmilles is respected throughout the world for the design and manufacture of its EDM systems. Its products will enable us to produce a myriad of components, and to carry out R&D work."
