Hynes on pole for PacWest Indy Lights seat
Former British Formula 3 champion Marc Hynes looks extremely likely to partner fellow Brit Dan Wheldon at PacWest's Indy Lights squad
Hynes, who beat current Formula 1 drivers Luciano Burti and Jenson Button to the F3 title in 1999, was invited for a second test with the team at Sebring in Florida this week. Team manager Paul 'Ziggy' Harcus was impressed with Hynes after a first 'shoot-out' test alongside Ralph Firman, who will now race in Formula Nippon, and Jeff Simmons in December.
Wheldon emerged from the test just a tenth quicker, lapping in 58.1secs to Hynes's 58.2secs. Marc also tested British American Racing's F1 car at Barcelona before Christmas.
"Both Dan and Marc had a good day pushing each other," said Harcus. "Overall we had a good test, and I'm happy with both drivers' performances. Towards the end of the day Marc had a small off, but he was OK."
Wheldon, who takes the place of last year's champion Scott Dixon (now in Champ Cars with PacWest), said: "We were pretty slow on the straights but we're not here for optimum lap times, we're here to test. It's great working with Ziggy and this team, I'm really looking forward to the upcoming season."
