The Dane, who also raced for Audi in the DTM in 2005, was presented his award by five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell.

When asked by host Steve Rider which of his victories stood out, Kristensen said: "It is a little bit like which child you prefer. Without the first the others would not have arrived, but the last one is the one I remember the best."

Looking to his future, Kristensen said he was awaiting the unveiling of the new Audi R10 sportscar later on this month.

"On the 13th, the car will be launched in Paris, and we are looking forward to seeing it. There are a lot of possibilities, is it open, closed, does it have two, four, 12, 16 cylinders? I am looking forward to seeing what it looks like."

Gregor Grant was a founding editor of Autosport and the award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement in motor racing.
