GK in the UK
With the second day of running at Rockingham cancelled without a single racing car taking to the track, waiting has become the watch word at Britain's all-new oval. A schedule for Saturday's proceedings has been announced, but while the water trapped underneath the asphalt surface continues to seep out onto the track, the Champ Cars will stay firmly in their garages. Gordon Kirby assesses reaction along the pit lane
"The only comment I have is that we're here to race and whenever they say they're ready to run, we're ready to race."
"CART's doing all they can to get the track ready. When they say go, we'll be ready to go."
"The problem that I've got is, and I'm not a civil engineer and I don't know the extent of the problem they've got, but I question whether they know the extent of the problem. We had a schedule laid out for what we were going to do today, then they went on an indefinite hold. And now it's off for today. I question whether they know how much water is under there. It seems to me, they've been working on it for several days, even before we tried to run yesterday. As much as I hate to say it, I'm questioning whether they are trying too hard to make something happen. It's been my experience that when you try too hard to make something happen, something will happen, but not necessarily what you're hoping for."
"Cutting right to the chase, we're chasing a stubborn race track. This is a very persistent situation with the water and we're throwing everything we've got at it. At this stage, I have to say we're not winning it. We're trying to figure out ways to try to help the situation. We're in that process now, but we're not where we need to be. The unfortunate thing is we're not even in a position to give it our best guess. We don't want people to have to stand around and spoil their day anymore than has been.
"There are wet spots around the entire circuit. It's not seamless, but we have a wet track in all four corners and also on the front straightaway. It's everywhere from perfectly on-line to off-line."
