Gidley facing tough debut

Walker Racing's new recruit Memo Gidley is preparing for his first ever Champ Car race at Portland this weekend.

The Toyota Atlantic graduate has been thrown in at the deep end but is happy simply to have made it to the top level of American motorsport.

'I started in this sport from ground zero,' he explains. 'I was a mechanic with no money and no connections, so this is a fantastic opportunity for me.'

The 29-year old American is deputising for Naoki Hattori. The Japanese driver suffered a broken leg when he crashed into Al Unser Jr on the first lap of his first ever CART race at Homestead in March. Hattori is not expected back until the middle of August.

Gidley beat British Indy Lights star Guy Smith to the Walker drive. He was third in Toyota Atlantic last year after winning three of his first four races.

'So far I've raced and won in everything from sailboats to motocross, karts, and Can-Am to Toyota Atlantic cars,' he explained. Gidley's team mate at Walker Racing, Gil de Ferran, is currently 7th in the CART standings.
