Friday practice: Brack pips da Matta
The front of the Champ Car field is beginning to look similar from week to week with the same front runners. At Toronto in the first practice session for the Molson Indy, Kenny Brack put in a late lap to pip Cristiano da Matta for fastest honours
Da Matta turned in a 59.620sec (105.982mph) effort in his seventh lap of the 90-minute session, and that time held until Brack managed a 59.614s on his final tour. Christian Fittipaldi was right there with his Newman-Haas team-mate, running the third fastest lap of the session in his primary car and the fifth best in his spare Lola-Toyota.
Tony Kanaan was the last driver to break the 60-second barrier, leading the Honda brigade, while Dario Franchitti was sixth overall with a 60.069sec lap in his Team Green Lola-Honda. Canadian favourites Alex Tagliani and Paul Tracy were next up, with Tagliani as the leading Ford-Cosworth and Reynard competitor.
Michael Andretti continued to struggle with his Lola-Honda in street course trim. He was dead last at 61.121secs, almost 1.5 seconds slower than Brack.
