Friday practice 1: Tony the tiger

Tony Kanaan set the pace in the opening practice session for the Vancouver Champ Car round.

The Brazilian got around the dusty 1.781-mile street circuit in 61.958 seconds for an average speed of 103.483mph.

Kanaan has been fast at several street course venues this year in his Mo Nunn Reynard-Honda but his best result of the season came at the Twin Ring Motegi oval in May.

Cristiano da Matta was second fastest in Friday morning action, just 0.01 slower than Kanaan at 91.968 seconds. Gil de Ferran and Roberto Moreno completed a 1-2-3-4 sweep for Brazilians, while Moreno and fifth fastest man Jimmy Vasser continued to demonstrate the Patrick team's recent improvement in form.

Alex Tagliani was the fastest Canadian, running sixth in his Forsythe Reynard-Ford. Paul Tracy was 17th and Patrick Carpentier 22nd.

The Team Green threesome weren't in the best of spirits, with Michael Andretti (13th) and Dario Franchitti (23rd) sandwiching Tracy. 1998 Vancouver winner Franchitti was limited to 28 laps of practice.

CART series leader Helio Castroneves stopped practice early to save tyres and was happy with 14th place on 63.020 seconds. That put him two places behind his closest challenger in the points race, Kenny Brack.
