Franchitti: Momentum is key to title

Dario Franchitti says he must keep up the momentum in Toronto this weekend, after winning the previous FedEx Champ Car series race at Portland, to maintain his challenge for the championship

The 28-year-old Scot won the Toronto street race around Exhibition Place in 1999, and tied on points with Juan Pablo Montoya in the championship that year but the Colombian won the title on the countback of best results. Franchitti currently lies third in the CART points race, 19 points behind series leader Kenny Brack.

"We have been able to put together some really good races of late and we need to keep the momentum going," said Franchitti. "Toronto's one of the tracks where the car has to do everything well. The car has to be able to brake well, it has to be able to steer well without too much understeer, yet it has to have good traction. So you can't be weak in any of those departments."

Franchitti knows all about how testing the Canadian venue can be, having thrown away a likely win in 1998 when he spun his brake-troubled car in the closing stages while leading.

"The layout is a challenge because its got a combination of fairly fast straights and low speed corners so it is difficult to hit the set-up just right," he said. "This is definitely a rhythm course that takes a lot of concentration."
