France: title 'unlikely' today
Team France are expecting to wrap up the A1 Grand Prix of Nations title at Laguna Seca next month
That's the view of team boss Jean-Paul Driot, who believes it will be "very unlikely" that Alexandre Premat can secure the crown this weekend in Mexico.
France hold a 28-point lead over fellow DAMS-run squad Team Switzerland. A maximum weekend score is 21 points and with two rounds to go after today's Monterrey races, Premat must outscore Swiss driver Neel Jani by 14 points in Mexico.
Premat has qualified second for the sprint race. But Jani is only one place behind him, starting third on the grid.
"Only Switzerland can realistically catch France," said Driot. "Brazil would have to do something like win every race. But we'll probably have to wait until Laguna Seca on March 12 to make sure of the title."
Switzerland's hopes of catching France are slim. Jani, who has raced for Switzerland all season, steps down from the team after this weekend to become Scuderia Toro Rosso's third driver in Formula One.
His replacement Giorgio Mondini is an A1 GP rookie and will be up against it to match Jani's front-running pace.
