Drivers devastated after Moore crash

Victory celebrations at Sunday's California 500 were cancelled following the death of Greg Moore, and as the drivers found out the news, there was widespread disbelief, tears, shock, and universal emotion

Dario Franchitti said: 'Today I lost one of the best friends I ever had. In the last couple of years, ever since I've known him, we shared a lot of good times together.

'He was the guy I competed with hardest on the track, and he was the guy that I had the most fun with away from the track.

'The guy was going to be champion, many, many times over. He was my friend.

'With what's happened, nothing else matters.'

Race winner Adrian Fernandez was one of many who burst into tears while climbing from his car, and summed up the feelings of all the drivers when he said: 'It's just so hard because Greg was such a good friend of ours.

'We'd been racing for a while and we had shared so many good moments inside and outside the race track. This is a tragedy for all of us, and I can't express how much. The win... it doesn't matter.

'My heart goes to his Dad, who I think is hurting a lot right now. I will remember Greg as a great gentleman, a great friend, and a fantastic race car driver.'

Max Papis, a close friend of Moore's was also overcome. 'He's up there in the sky, and these are just messages that God sent to us. I'm so sad, there is no word, there is no nothing. No satisfaction would pay this back.

'When I came across the start finish line I thought I had won, then Bobby [Rahal] came on the radio and said: 'I have some very bad news for you'. I had no idea.

'We need to understand why things happen. We are not here to pray for people, we are not here to kill ourselves, we need to understand why.

'We must think of Gonzalo [Rodriguez] and Jeff [Krosnoff]. We are not here for this.

'Now my prayers are with Rick [Greg's father] and all Greg's family. Greg was a special person in and out of the track and...there are no words.

'I don't understand why these things happen, and I don't accept them.'

Christian Fittipaldi added: 'This is a very bad moment for all of us, there is no doubt about it. It's even hard to put it into words.

'We're out there to practice a very nice and competitive sport, but we're really not out
there to kill ourselves. This year we have had two losses, and my thoughts go to Team Penske also. It's been very, very difficult for them this year.

'We're out there to be competitive, and put on a show for the fans, not to put our lives on the line. I have no words...Definitely Greg will be missed everywhere, not only on the track, but outside the track, and hanging out with us. It's a very difficult moment.'
