Donington to host Premier1 GP

Donington Park will host Britain's round of next year's inaugural Premier1 Grand Prix series, the championship set up around the world's most famous football clubs

A 10-round calendar of dates has been announced for 2002, including eight European tracks and two South American circuits. The races in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro will provide a climax to the first season next November.

Each of the 24 Reynard-built cars will carry the colours of a different football club, all of whom will be battling it out to become the first Premier1 champion team.

Along with the football clubs' title hunt, there will also be one for the drivers. But rather than a conventional points-based system, this will take the form of an 'order of merit' similar to that used in golf. The drivers can win a maximum of $250,000 per race and a tally of their prize money will be kept to decide the top driver of the season.

So far, two football clubs have been officially announced to take part in the series: legendary Portuguese team Benfica and English giant Leeds United. Three more clubs are set to be announced this Thursday.
