De Ferran pips Franchitti
Gil de Ferran has edged out Dario Franchitti and taken pole position for the Toronto round of the CART Championship Series
However, Dario has started from pole here for the past two years only to crash out of the lead each time, so perhaps a position on the outside of row one is a better omen.
Major improvements in second qualifying came from Christian Fittipaldi and Bryan Herta, both of whom moved into the top ten. Championship leader Juan Montoya is back in 8th spot, but can never be ruled out in the race.
Walker Racing's second driver, rookie Memo Gidley, was as impressive as his pole-winning team mate. In his fourth CART race deputising for Naoki Hattori, Gidley qualified 15th, ahead of both PacWest cars and both Patrick cars, among others.
