Dakar: Timbuktu stages cancelled

Dakar organisers have cancelled the two stages planned between Nema and Timbuktu, after Mali government has issued a security advisory warning against running in the area

Organisers said Mali's ministry of foreign affairs recommended they avoid Timbuktu, as the country would not be able to guarantee the security of participants and spectators.

Subsequently, Dakar organisers announced several changes to the event's itinerary. The 10th stage, originally planned between Nema in Mauritania and Timbuktu in Mali, has now been replaced with a loop stage Nema-Nema.

The following day, on the 11th stage, the competitors will only run for half a day after a morning rest, running from Nema to Ayoun-el-Atrous, also in Mauritania.

The rally will nevertheless make its way to Mali on January 18th, in the 12th stage towards Kayes.

The current Rally Dakar itinerary includes 15 stages, covering a total of 7,915 kms.
