Council promotes Bathurst

The newly created Bathurst Regional Council in Australia is expected to step up its role from controlling the useage of the Mount Panorama road course in NSW to becoming the event coordinator for the 2004 Bathurst 24 Hour there. An amalgamation of the former Bathurst city and Evans shire councils, it is now preparing budgets for the event, including a determination on the most viable TV broadcast option, following the demise of PROCAR, the former promoter

The venue's third annual 24-hour GT/touring car race will be held over November 19-21. Bathurst Regional Council administrator Kath Knowles said: "The council and PROCAR have come together to sort out a list of priorities to ensure the event has every opportunity of success. High on the list is working out a beneficial broadcasting arrangement and that will be crucial to the outcome of a successful event." PROCAR representatives are in Germany this week to meet potential entrants at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, on which the Australian endurance event is modelled.

PROCAR chairman Ross Palmer commented: "The Bathurst 24 Hour has enormous potential not only as a motor race, but also as a significant boost to tourism and economic growth in central west New South Wales. It's appropriate, with these benefits in store and major [circuit] infrastructure investment under way, that the council should take a greater role."
