CART title fight closes up again
Just 11 points separate the top five drivers in the CART Championship after series leader Michael Andretti suffered another disastrous race in Vancouver
The Newman-Haas driver was never on the pace and tried to make up ground by only pitting once. However, the gamble failed and he crawled to a halt on the final lap. He had already dropped from eighth to 12th after going very wide at turn six while trying to hold off title rival Gil de Ferran. He was still classified 12th but was not happy afterwards.
"We made a big mistake choosing a one-stop strategy," he grimaced. "If we'd stopped twice we would have been fourth or fifth. This is really gonna hurt us."
Vancouver winner Paul Tracy is now six points behind Andretti in the standings, with Adrian Fernandez, de Ferran and Roberto Moreno also within striking distance of the series lead.
1 Michael Andretti 126 points
