CART selects first driver for new scheme

CART chiefs have selected the first African-American racing driver for its driver development programme.

David Francis Jnr will be testing with Arciero-Wells Racing in the autumn. If he impresses CART bosses, he will be invited to test Barry Green's Team KOOL Green Indy Lights car.

'David [Francis] has demonstrated the kind of skills that we are looking for in a race car driver and it's great to be able to announce him as the first choice for our CART programme,' said Lenny Miller, team manager at Miller Racing Group, which is helping with the programme.

CART launched its driver development programme a few weeks ago, with the aim of encouraging more people from racial minorities into motorsport.

'This is a dream come true for me,' said 26-year-old Francis.

'To test with a top-notch team like Arciero-Wells Racing is a great opportunity and I am sure it will help me move up the ladder toward my ultimate goal of racing in Champ Cars in the FedEx Championship Series.'
