CART drivers to avoid Indy rookie tests
Any CART drivers who choose to contest the 2000 Indianapolis 500 will not have to pass the traditional Indy 'Rookie test.'
The Indy Racing League have confirmed that experienced Champ Car drivers will be allowed to go straight into qualifying for the famous race. With the IRL adopting very different technical regulations to CART, they would technically be series beginners.
Of the CART teams, at present only Ganassi, Walker Racing and Team Penske look set to contest the Indy 500. Ford and Mercedes have discouraged their CART teams from entering, and other teams are unwilling to spend out on new IRL chassis and engines for a one-off race.
'At this time not a single CART team has purchased an IRL chassis or engine,' said a series spokesman. 'We'll certainly welcome them to the series like anybody else.'
The Nazareth round of the Fedex series clashes with the main Indianapolis open test session, so any CART teams planning to contest the Indy 500 are likely to enter the IRL round at Las Vegas on 22nd April as alternative preparation.
