Brundle takes his first pole in F2
Alex Brundle claimed his first Formula 2 pole position after coming out on top of a tense session at Magny-Cours
Rain before the start of the session left the track wet and the early times around 30 seconds away from the pace set in practice.
Gradually though, a dry line began to emerge and Brundle, who had been among the front three throughout the session, improved his pace to just outside the 1m31s bracket.
It looked as if his hopes of pole were gone when practice pace-setter Miki Monras took the top spot with three minutes left, and was swiftly followed onto the front row by fellow Spaniard Ramon Pineiro.
But Brundle had something in reserve and produced the best time of the morning with a 1m30.754s lap, a time that Christopher Zanella failed to match by just 0.128s when he crossed the line a few minutes later.
Monras and Pineiro completed the second row with championship leader Mirko Bortolotti and Tobias Hegewald next up.
British drivers Jack Clarke, Will Bratt and James Cole were next up - the latter taking a career-nest ninth spot - while Mihai Marinescu completed the top 10, one place ahead of series debutant Jon Lancaster.
