British driver: David Coulthard
David Coulthard has won this year's British Competition Driver AUTOSPORT award
Although the McLaren driver found his car was not a match for the dominant Ferrari, the Scottish ace did manage to score a fine victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, and finished fifth in the final championship standings.
His Monte Carlo victory was particularly memorable because of the manner he fought off both Juan Pablo Montoya and Michael Schumacher. It was also the only time that the 2002 Ferrari would be beaten in a grand prix all season.
Coulthard accepted the award from previous winner Damon Hill, and said: "It's a great challenge in Monaco and I take a great deal of pride in that I've won there twice. It was frustrating that McLaren could not do anything to beat the F-2002 Ferrari, but everyone in McLaren is working flat out for next year. There are some remarkable engineeers at McLaren."
When asked about next year's new qualifying regulations, Coulthard added: "I think the end result will be very similar. The reality is that it is not going to make a great deal of difference. I do not think you should handicap hard work - the only way to achieve success is to give 110%."
