Bourdais quickest in practice 2

Sebastien Bourdais proved his desultory first qualifying session for the Grand Prix of Toronto was just a one-off when he pulled a healthy margin over the chasing pack in the Saturday morning free practice

The Newman/Haas Racing ace set a 58.778 seconds lap on the harder compound rubber to lap the 1.755-mile street course at 107.489mph.

The Frenchman was some 0.4 seconds quicker than RuSPORT's Justin Wilson, despite being one of the many to skid into a run-off area in the course of the session.

Wilson was 0.08 seconds quicker than former teammate AJ Allmendinger who set provisional pole yesterday to guarantee himself a slot on the front row.

The American beat his Forsythe Championship Racing partner Paul Tracy, who tried out the softer compound tyres on his final run. Tracy, however, outbraked himself into Turn 1, so his true potential wasn't realised.

Cristiano da Matta took an age to set a decently fast time, and ended up half a second slower than RuSPORT teammate Wilson, but just ahead of Nelson Philippe, who continues his impressive form for CTE Racing-HVM.

One of the stars of the session was Conquest Racing's Andrew Ranger, who edged Canadian compatriot Alex Tagliani (Team Australia) for eighth fastest time.

Tagliani's teammate, Will Power was again fastest of the rookies with 11th quickest time overall, just ahead of Mario Dominguez (Dale Coyne Racing), despite many excursions down escape roads.
