Andretti pips Montoya in Phoenix test

Michael Andretti continued his impressive winter form by topping the Firestone tyre test at Phoenix

The Newman-Haas star looked quick throughout and ended up narrowly ahead of 1999 champion Juan Montoya.

The Columbian was impressed with the straightline speed offered by his new Toyota engine, but lost out on some late running after a major engine failure.

IRL convert Kenny Brack was third for Team Rahal despite losing time with an engine fire. Fellow rookie Alex Tagliani also impressed by going fifth quickest.

The feeling at Phoenix was that those running Ford and Toyota engines currently have the edge. Paul Tracy's KOOL Green Reynard-Honda languished down the timesheets, while Penske's Helio Castro-Neves brought the day to an early end when he suffered a spectacular Honda engine blow-up.
