Alphand wins 12th stage

Luc Alphand won the latest stage of the Dakar Rally, but Stephane Peterhansel finished third to further extend his lead in the endurance race over Mitsubishi team-mate Hiroshi Masuoka

BMW driver Alphand, who lies fourth overall, completed the 213km stage in 1h54m53s. Jean-Louis Schlesser was second fastest in one of his eponymous Ford-powered machines.

Peterhansel was 43s faster than double Dakar winner Masuoka through the stake, extending his lead to 1h4m43s. Schlesser continues to run third overall, although he is over 2 hours down from the leader.

Colin McRae continues to survive in the desert. The Nissan driver set the 13th fastest time on the stage, although his earlier troubles ensure he lies 21st overall, albeit 17h38m15s off the lead.
