A3 to Run Volkswagen Cars

A1 Grand Prix will use two-litre Formula Volkswagen single-seater cars for its A3 Racing Series feeder formula, Autosport-Atlas can reveal

The Volkswagen backed-series has been designed as a training scheme to help drivers from nations without traditional motorsport heritage to prepare for the 550bhp Lola Zyteks they will drive in the inaugural "World Cup of Motorsport".

The series will be based at various circuits in South Africa, and will feature three 10-day training sessions and two race weekends run to A1 Grand Prix format. Between race weekend drivers will get the opportunity to sample more powerful cars.

The long-term plan is for regionalised A3 Series to be launched over the world, to train drivers for their countries' A1 GP entries.

A1 Grand Prix founder Sheikh Maktoum said: "By providing a platform for driver development, A3 will reduce any disparities that may exist when teams from emerging motorsport countries compete against traditional racing nations. This guarantees exciting high-level races for A1 Grand Prix."

A1 Grand Prix has bought the intellectual property rights to the car. The deal will result in the first carbon-fibre single-seater race car manufacturing facility set up in South Africa, developing motorsport manufacturing engineers, technicians and mechanics.
