A1 wants a night race in season 2

A1 Grand Prix is likely to continue to tread new ground by staging the series' first night race next season

Series founder Sheikh Maktoum bin Hasher bin Maktoum al Maktoum confirmed that the idea is being researched and is likely to happen in at least one of the rounds next year.

Maktoum said he looked into the possibility of holding a night race in the inaugural season but felt the plan was too ambitious for a fledgling championship.

However, with the series having completed its first season last weekend, Maktoum is looking at new ways of expanding the championship for the second season.

The location for such an event would be one of the hotter countries - such as Indonesia, Dubai and Malasia, where it would be more bearable to run in the evening under floodlight.

"A night race is on the cards for next year," Maktoum told autosport.com. "Not that much lighting is needed actually.

"I got lied to the first time round. Someone said it could cost us five million dollars. Do I look like I have stupid written on my forehead? Then they told me it was actually half a million dollars. Ooops I added a zero? How did that happen?

"I think we will throw one in there. It is better for weather and it would be great to see the glowing disc brakes on these cars.

"If we could go somewhere that was really, really hot then we should make it at night. Malaysia, Dubai and Indonesia are three like that."

Night races are prevalent in other formula, including the IRL and NASCAR. However, there have been few single-seater road course night races, with the last major one being Champ Car's night race at Cleveland in 2003.

Earlier this weekend, organisers confirmed that the first round of season 2 will be held at Zandvoort in the Netherlands, on October 1st.
