Buemi leads by 1.7s at the start of lap eight. Vergne, Abt, Bird, Prost, di Grassi are all in contention for P2 as it stands.

Mechanical flags for Piquet (P7) and Rast (who has just served his penalty). That's gutting for Piquet who was having comfortably his most competitive event of the season.

Buemi is bolting clear now as Abt harries Vergne for all his worth. Vergne holds on, and Bird now attacks Abt for P3.

Superb, late move from Buemi on the brakes and he takes the lead at Turn 5. Stellar. Now Abt attacks Vergne into Turn 1 as they start lap seven.

Replays show Piquet lost out to di Grassi at the start after getting a massive slide on at Turn 1.

There's a proper train of cars at the front, from Vergne in first to Piquet in seventh. Then there's just over a second back to Turvey. Three laps complete, so plenty of time for this to spread out.

Henning Solberg is the slowest car through the stage, 2m48s slower than Meeke. He has a broken rear differential he suspects.

The FV8 3.5 field has set off on its formation lap. The clear-up operation after Isaakyan's huge accident has caused an eight-minute delay to the timetable.

Sordo is in 9.3s slower than Mikkelsen and 9.6s slower than Ogier. Sordo is now 4.3s behind Mikkelsen in fourth overall.

Mikkelsen: "We tried to keep a good pace, this stage wasn't as good as my previous ones. I'm pleased to be here at the end of the loop with a good feeling ahead of this afternoon."

Latvala has matched Ogier's pace at the fourth split.

Mikkelsen lost a little time at the end, and finishes 0.3s down on Ogier. That means the gap is 12.8s between the two, with Ogier ahead in second overall.

Word from a very subdued SMP Racing garage is that a parc ferme infringement has caused Vaxiviere to be relegated from pole to last on the grid for this afternoon's opening race.

Aurelien Panis is promoted to pole ahead of Arden team-mate Egor Orudzhev.

Meeke 4.7s faster than Mikkelsen's benchmark at the second split, that's 8.1s faster than Ogier too so his lead will be around a minute overall at this rate. Perfect morning for the Northern Irishman.

Ostberg comes in 2m08.5s slower than Ogier. That's a big blow to his rally there thanks to running in front wheel drive only.

Sordo isn't looking quick here, he's 8.8s slower than Mikkelsen at the fourth split, that should put Mikkelsen into third overall.

Latvala 1.8s slower than Mikkelsen at the third split, but looks set to beat Ogier's time.

Up ahead Ogier finishes with a time of 25m19.9s. Says he's driven as well as he can, and there's nothing more he can do.

Camilli second fastest at the first split, until Kris Meeke goes fastest by 2.3s over Mikkelsen. Truly dominating performance from Meeke who is set for a clean sweep of this morning loop.

Mikkelsen now passes the third stage 3s up on Ogier. Looking at Sordo's pace, we might well see Mikkelsen go into third and close on Ogier overall.

Latvala second fastest at the second split too, he's 1.6s slower than Mikkelsen.

That last tweets shows how badly Ostberg's issue is affecting his drive. He's 1m19.8s slower than Ogier at the third split.

Looks like the battle for the second place between Ogier, Sordo and Mikkelsen is going to close up even more at this rate.

Sordo is now 3.7s slower than Mikkelsen at the second split, and he's losing time to Ogier too. Exactly 0.3s slower than Ogier at that point.

Ogier goes by the third split in a time of 16m18.9s, as Mikkelsen goes past the second 3.4s faster than him.

Good effort from Latvala at the opening split, he's third fastest. That's 0.1s quicker than Ogier and 2.3s slower than Mikkelsen.

Mikkelsen has been one of the drivers of the morning and he's again proving quicker than Ogier. He's 2.4s faster than Ogier, and Sordo is 0.7s faster than the Frenchman too.

Lefebvre finishes, and he's 2.8s slower than Neuville. One to watch, the damage to his car doesn't seem as bad as first feared.

Neuville fastest in SS9, 1.1s ahead of Mikkelsen. Confidence has to be growing for the Belgian, can we see a charge tomorrow?

Latvala finishes his day on SS9, he's 7.2s slower than Mikkelsen. Imagine he's off for a very long lie down after this.

Meeke is 1.5s slower than Neuville on SS8. He said he wouldn't be as quick on these two stages. Won't hurt him too much, but could allow Ogier to make up a few seconds.
