Tanak is in and now he's fastest! He's 0.5s up on Mikkelsen. His lead is now 23.5s
Mikkelsen goes fastest. He's 0.5s up on Ogier.

That's the perfect start to the afternoon for the Citroen man.
Hanninen comes in second quickest so far. We're not comparing him to Latvala though, he will be hoping to get the jump on Evans, who is 0.8s ahead of him overall.
LATVALA IS HAPPY!

He says he's feeling comfortable with the car and he's determined.

He must have had something nice for lunch. Food makes me happy, too.
Paddon comes in 2.9s faster than Kremer. Latvala on his way to stage end as we type.
Quick reminder: The opening afternoon stage is also the second afternoon stage...

The field will go through Arena Panzerplatte twice ahead of a blast through daddy Panzerplatte, which Hanninen topped this morning
We are GO for the opening afternoon stage. Kremer is at stage end already
We have 10 minutes before everyone heads out for their second run on the Arena Panzerplatte superspecial.

It's a small stage, so not much can happen on it, right?

Try telling Neuville that! He suffered damage to his rear left which ended his Rally Germany hopes, and made his title rival Ogier a very happy man.
"The organisers have seen fit to address the onset of muddy puddles by dropping tonnes and tonnes of gravel on the access roads in and out of service."
Right, we're off for some lunch. We'll be back here for the afternoon's action at 2pm.

We'll leave you with a picture that demonstrates the ingenuity of the Rally Germany organisers, courtesy of David Evans...
SS12 summary:
  • Mikkelsen tops the stage to close the gap to leader Tanak to 23s
  • Hanninen moves to 0.8s behind Evans in fourth
  • Kopecky extends his WRC2 lead to 12.5s
Here's our very relaxed rally leader:

"I have a very good feeling in the car and I just need to keep having good, clean runs."
Tanak is 2.7s slower than both Mikkelsen through the stage, but goes into the afternoon with a lead of 23s
Fighting words from Mikkelsen...

"We had a clean stage. I'm definitely not giving up without a fight."
Mikkelsen goes fastest! 1.6s faster than Ogier to increase his overall gap to 6.9s
Here's Mr Ogier:

"It's been an OK morning. I am trying to keep the pressure on the guys in front."
We're hearing that Ogier has hit a bollard at a hairpin. It hasn't affected his time too much. He's second fastest through the stage, just 0.6s slower than Paddon.
Evans finishes the stage 1.6s slower than Hanninen, but crucially keeps fourth place but only by 0.8s!
Breen says he's struggling with confidence at the moment, he also had a bit of a moment:

"I don't have the confidence to push 100%. I overshot the junction and stalled. Not the best stage for me."
Little bit of good news for Latvala, he has gained 1.2s on Breen. Not a lot, but better than a loss for the Finn, especially with no handbrake.
Here's Hanninen:

"It was ok, nothing special. It was clean. Definitely a better morning than yesterday, but that's not difficult."
Hanninen completes the stage 0.1s slower than Latvala. Remember, Hanninen is currently locked in a battle with Evans for fourth.
If you put money on Latvala being happy at stage end we have some bad news for you...

"It's not so easy to drive at junctions with no handbrake. We'll have to fix it at service."
Latvala is up and running. We're taking bets on his mood at the end of this stage:

Upset 1/5
Happy 50/1

Place your bets!
Kremer is safely through. The sun is beaming down now. 'Bone dry' is how the surface is being described out there at the moment.
SS11 summary
  • Tanak further extends his lead over Mikkelsen, who had a spin and stalled, to 25.7s
  • Ogier closes in on Mikkelsen for second. The gap is now down to 5.3s
  • Another impressive stage from Hanninen moves his to 2.4s behind Evans in fourth
  • Kopecky extends his WRC2 lead over Camilli. Tidemand still on course to become champion
SS11 results:

Leading stage times:

1 Tanak 8m59.9s
2 Ogier +0.4s
3 Paddon +1.1s
4 Hanninen +3.9s
5 Latvala +4.5s

Overall leaderboard:

1 Tanak
2 Mikkelsen +25.7s
3 Ogier +31s
4 Evans +1m14.9s
5 Hanninen +1m17.3s
6 Breen +1m53s
7 Latvala +2m11.2s
8 Paddon +4m19.6s
9 Kopecky +5m41.9s
WRC2 update:

Kopecky extends his lead by by 1.3s over Camilli

Championship leader, Tidemand is also safely through - albeit with some cosmetic damage to the car.
Latvala may be downbeat, but he's closing in on Craig Breen for sixth. The gap is down to 18.2s now.

There's hope yet, Jari-Matti!
Paddon comes through the stage with some minor damage, but nothing that has affected his time.

He's the fastest so far...

[Paddon on the damage] "It's nothing major. Nearly every corner has a hay bale and you have to kiss them to get a good run."

He did more than kiss the hay bales by the looks of it...
We haven't mentioned Elfyn Evans much today (Sorry, Elfyn)

We will be watching his battle with Hanninen for fourth very closely though. The pair are separated by 6.1s heading into Freisen.

Hanninen was fastest on Panzerplatte and closed in on Evans by 16.9s. What can he do on the shorter countryside stage? We'll soon find out!
We are GO on Freisen... which, by the way, is confusing us every time we type it. I before E except after F??
Anyway, Kremer and Paddon are off. The stage is reportedly mostly dry, aside from a few damp patches.
