Grid:
1 Marquez; 2 Vinales; 3 Zarco;
4 Iannone; 5 Rins; 6 Miller;
7 Rossi; 8 Petrucci; 9 Dovizioso;
10 Syahrin; 11 P. Espargaro; 12 Bautista;
13 Abraham; 14 Nakagami; 15 Morbidelli;
16 Smith; 17 Simeon; 18 Pedrosa;
19 A. Espargaro; 20 Luthi; 21 Torres;
22 Redding; 23 Jones.
Local rider Mike Jones took the Angel Nieto Ducati ride vacated by Bautista for the weekend. He will start last, and he only has two races of MotoGP experience from 2016 - although he scored a point in one of them at this very track. Jordi Torres continues to fill in for Tito Rabat and is on another decent weekend as he beat not only Jones, but Scott Redding in qualfiying.
There was drama in the Moto3 category as title contender Marco Bezzecchi fought his way up to victory contention from 15th on the grid only to be taken out by Gabriel Rodrigo. Jorge Martin meanwhile bagged a solid fifth as Albert Arenas won.
In Moto2, neither Francesco Bagnaia nor Miguel Oliveira managed to finish in the top 10 as Brad Binder denied Joan Mir his maiden win in the category.
So, if not Honda and Ducati then surely Yamaha is the favourite, right? Well, no. Suzuki, especially Andrea Iannone, has been superior this weekend so far and if anyone can pull away early on and take a dominant victory, it is the Maniac.
Analysis: How Phillip Island has shaken up MotoGP's form book
Standings (Top 10): 1 Marquez 296; 2 Dovizioso 194; 3 Rossi 185; 4 Vinales 155; 5 Crutchlow 148; 6 Zarco 133; 7 Petrucci 133; 8 Lorenzo 130; 9 Rins 118; 10 Iannone 113.
The dominance of Marc Marquez and Andrea Dovizioso is set to come to an end, neither of them are at their best at Phillip Island.
Honda is struggling, Dani Pedrosa is on one of the worst weekends of his career, Cal Crutchlow broke his ankle on Friday and is out of action. Marquez was complaining, too, but he still delivered the pole position. Classic Marc.
Dovizioso doesn't expect to fight for the win but he definitely accomplished the not-so-hard task of doing better than last year. The rest of the Ducatis, including Alvaro Bautista who doesn't have the best of times with the factory team, not so impressive. Perhaps Jack Miller can mix things up if it starts to rain during the race.
Welcome to the live coverage of the Australian MotoGP Grand Prix at the beautiful Phillip Island, one of the undoubtedly most exciting circuits on the calendar.
