Lorenzo's lead expands to half a second, while Crutchlow passes Espargaro for seventh in the opening sequence of corners, and Dovizioso bumps Hernandez out of the top 10.
Over the last couple of laps Rossi has taken 0.7s out of Pedrosa. He's only 1.0s back now.

Crutchlow has picked off Redding for ninth, and he's now on the case of Petrucci.
Pedrosa's mini-charge has slowed somewhat on that lap, he's dropped to one second behind Marquez but he still has Rossi comfortably covered.
By the standards of the early laps here, Lorenzo has pulled a gap. It's two tenths..
Iannone is unable to hang on to the works Hondas and Yamahas out front - the man in fifth is focused on keeping the Tech 3 bikes at bay, led by Smith.
Marquez continues to sit on the rear wheel of Lorenzo, but they are being caught by Pedrosa. Rossi doesn't quite have the pace right now - 1.6s behind Pedrosa - but he could be biding his time in a race that is expected to be tyre-critical later on.
Crutchlow and Petrucci were the big losers in the early laps, slumping from P4 and P5 on the grid to P10 and P8 currently.

Replays show Iannone went wide at Turn 6 when Rossi passed him earlier on.
Marquez is still sitting on Lorenzo's tail, but Pedrosa is matching their pace in third. Rossi is 1.2s adrift of the second Honda at the moment, with Iannone not far back in fifth.
Smith is recovering from going wide a lap ago, he re-takes Espargaro for sixth.
Rossi has passed Iannone - so the championship leader is already up to fourth.
Marquez has a look down the front straight at the end of lap one, but he decides against attacking. They're already easing away from Pedrosa.

Marquez leads the field away for the formation lap.
It looks like the hard tyres are the compound of choice for the factory riders at the front - certainly the Hondas and Lorenzo.
Meanwhile, the wet-shod bikes are all lined up in the pits - based on the weather there's been so far today they could be called upon at some point in this GP.

Not long now until the start of the formation lap - the grid is starting to be cleared.
Points leader Rossi hasn't looked at ease all weekend, which is reflected in his eighth place on the grid. He's usually a better racer than he is a qualifier though, so he'll be looking to move forwards and at least limit the damage inflicted by Marquez and Lorenzo in the title race.

Moto3 was all about tyre choice, with Livio Loi taking a dominant victory after starting the race on slick tyres. The only other rider to do the same, Scotsman John McPhee, came home second, crucially losing time due to a ride-through penalty he had to serve early on.
Moto2 started with a slightly damp track, but the race was much more conventional (in Moto3 only a handful of bikes were on the lead lap once everyone had switched to slicks after the start), and Alex Rins took the spoils in a six-bike thriller at the front of the field

While it's currently a one-two for the factory Yamaha team-mates of Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, both have been at pains to point out they believe reigning champion Marc Marquez - on pole today - will be a factor in the title race despite his current deficit of 65 points:

There's been changeable weather throughout the day at Indianapolis so far, playing its part in the Moto2 and Moto3 events we've already had today. But, as things stand, the track is dry with less than 30 minutes to go until the start of the big race.
