Webber leads the way in first session

Mark Webber was quickest in the opening qualifying session for the Monaco round of the FIA Formula 3000 Championship, but category returnee Stephane Sarrazin made an immediate impact with the second fastest time

Webber lapped his Super Nova car around the Principality in 1m29.873s, 0.275secs quicker than Sarrazin, who has been drafted in to the Prost Junior squad to replace Nicolas Filiberti. The Frenchman has not raced in F3000 since the McLaren Junior squad dropped him halfway through the season.

Tomas Enge was third quickest for Nordic Racing, but his series leading team mate Justin Wilson could only manage the fifth quickest time. A1-Ring front row man Patrick Friesacher was again on the pace with the Marko-run Red Bull team and was fourth fastest.

A1-Ring runner-up Bas Leinders was sixth quickest, ahead of Ulsterman Dino Morelli who was seventh in only his second race back in the formula with Astromega. Darren Manning was eighth, ahead of the returning Ricardo Mauricio in the second Red Bull machine.

The second session starts and 11.00 local time (10.00 BST) and Autosport.com will keep you up to speed with all the action.
