Speed Critical of GP2 Rules

Scott Speed has branded GP2's reverse grid format as 'ridiculous', and the American believes the inaugural title has been devalued by the car's early season technical glitches

Speed Critical of GP2 Rules

The iSport driver thinks the GP2 series' format, where the top eight finishers from Saturday's main race start in reverse positions for Sunday's shorter sprint race, combined with the car trouble the series experienced at the start of the season means that his fellow drivers will not be concerned about winning the Championship outright.

Speed is currently third in the points standings, but he is the only driver in the top six not to have won a race this season.

"I'm not concerned about the Championship and to be honest I don't think anyone is," he told Autosport-Atlas. "With all the problems they've had with the cars this year and this ridiculous inversion of the top eight [for race two] among the drivers I don't think anyone is [concerned about the title] at this point.

"We're just taking it race by race. For example, [Olivier] Pla and [Clivio] Piccione have won a race this year, and they're nowhere [in the Championship]."

Nine different drivers have taken race wins in the 17 races run so far this season, but the Red Bull-backed driver defended his winless record.

"In Barcelona I didn't get a win because the clutch slipped off the line - we should easily have won that race," he added. "Obviously I had a great chance in a few of them, and they've slipped away for a few reasons. It is frustrating, but I'm not so concerned."
