Senna on top in Spa practice

Bruno Senna set a searing pace in free practice in the GP2 Series at Spa-Francorchamps on Friday, the Brazilian lapping well clear of the pack

Fresh from his return to form at Monza, where he scored a podium finish to end a dismal run of results by his standards, Senna lapped his Arden International car in 1:57.790, over half a second clear of the opposition. Luca Filippi (Super Nova), who also enjoyed an excellent Monza, was second fastest on 1:58.291.

Filippi was one of the few to improve his time on the second set of tyres, as a red flag wiped out over seven minutes of the 30-minute session. It was caused by Andi Zuber shunting his iSport car at the left-hander e after Rivage, where he wiped off his right-front corner after understeering into the tyre wall.

"I just made a mistake and understeered wide," said Zuber. "But there's no run-off there, just a strip of astroturf and gravel. It just sucked me into the tyre wall."

Lucas di Grassi was third fastest for ART Grand Prix, on a weekend where he needs to keep title rival Timo Glock in range if he's to overcome him in the series' finale at Valencia later this month. Glock was down in ninth, but was on a better lap when the red flags appeared.

Adam Carroll was fourth fastest for FMS, albeit three tenths down on di Grassi, ahead of DAMS pairing Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima. Giorgio Pantano was sixth fastest, having languished in the early running down in 14th.

The uninjured Zuber, Glock and Mike Conway (Super Nova) rounded out the top 10, although the latter's time was matched to the thousandth by Karun Chandhok (Durango).
